minimalism with teeth

the challenge

navarre quinn is a UI/UX designer with a sharp eye and a body of work that ranges from bold typographic experiments to carefully considered product interfaces. the irony? their own portfolio felt like an afterthought — a default template with no distinct voice.

the core tension was philosophical: how do you design a portfolio for someone who designs portfolios? every pixel would be scrutinized. every spacing decision would signal whether quinn actually practices what they preach.

our approach

restraint became the guiding principle. we chose a monospaced typeface as the primary font — unusual for a portfolio — because it communicates precision and intentionality. the layout is a rigid three-column grid on desktop that collapses gracefully on mobile, with generous negative space that lets each project thumbnail command its own visual territory.

the light/dark mode toggle isn't cosmetic; it fundamentally alters the mood. light mode feels editorial and approachable, while dark mode shifts the site into something more immersive and gallery-like. both modes were designed simultaneously, not retrofitted.

project cards show minimal text — just a title in uppercase monospace — forcing the visual work to carry the narrative. hover states reveal a subtle "see work" prompt without disrupting the grid. the blog section follows the same typographic system, creating continuity between showcase and thought leadership.

the outcome

the portfolio immediately attracted attention from the design community. session durations jumped dramatically — visitors spend over four minutes exploring, which in portfolio terms is an eternity. the dark mode variant became a particular talking point, shared repeatedly across design-focused social channels.

more importantly, quinn reported a shift in the quality of incoming work. the portfolio now acts as a filter, attracting clients who value craft and intentionality over volume and speed. the right projects started finding their way in.
